01 The Brief
A multistate adult literacy campaign wanted a handy way to showcase the project.
Society for Development Alternatives runs one of the largest adult female literacy projects of the country – TARA Akshar. It has educated more than 2,38,000 women in 11 states across India.
The campaign conducts a six week basic literacy course followed by a 5 month course on the every-day-applications of the earlier course. The course had a unique adult-learning curriculum that used various memory hooks to build on the existing knowledge of the learners.
Development Alternatives wanted to document the project in an innovative yet portable way.
02 What we did
On going through the project details we felt that while the project’s scale and statistics could look impressive, it were individual human stories that could create the real impact.
We proposed conducting multiple photo shoots over two years in the various territories, and present the results in the form of a photobook.
We conducted 3 trips each to four representative villages over the two year period. The villages were spread across different states. The idea was to visually capture the change in lives of the individual women who took the course.
In the first trip we photographed multiple ‘candidate learners’ who showed a promise of visible change. These learners were then tracked and photographed again twice during the two year period.
