In rural India, poor awareness and outdated practices continue to harm the wellbeing of working horses and donkeys.
Explanation of the Problem
In many rural parts of India, horses and donkeys are vital for livelihoods; yet, due to limited resources and awareness, the practices surrounding their care are often outdated or harmful. Brooke India, a branch of the UK-based charity Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys, wanted to change this by educating horse-rearing communities. But how do you deliver a serious message to rural India in a way that’s actually engaging and memorable?
How do we make good horsemanship both relatable and respected?
To empower rural communities with the knowledge and values of good horsemanship through creative storytelling.
Design Objectives
- Build a culturally relatable and inspiring central character.
- Use animation and storytelling to drive home key messages.
- Make the content engaging for both children and adults.
- Develop a scalable model using comics and video.
- Ensure ease of distribution and high recall in rural settings.
What We Did
We created a culturally rooted, imitable character to serve as the face of the campaign. Through a series of animated films and comic books, we delivered key lessons in good horsemanship with empathy and entertainment.

Topic Ideation
We identified key themes around good horsemanship that would resonate with rural communities.

Character Development
We designed a culturally rooted protagonist who could educate while earning the respect of the audience.

Storytelling
We crafted simple, story-driven scripts that delivered practical lessons in an emotionally engaging way.

Storyboarding
We visualized every scene to ensure clarity of messaging and seamless storytelling.

Signature Music
A custom designed signature music for the series was composed and recorded in a studio in Mumbai and the same was deployed – both in the animation films and independently for its recall value.

Voice Recording
We recorded voice-overs with regional accents to enhance relatability and local appeal.

Editing and Production
We stitched it all together into polished episodes ready for distribution in both digital and print formats.

Animation
We brought the characters and stories to life through vibrant and expressive animation.
Outcome
We created 4 engaging animated episodes with 5 voice-over artists bringing regional flavour to the series. Additionally, we had designed 2200+ hand-crafted frames. The comic books and videos were distributed across rural India. The content is now actively used by Brooke India to educate communities across the nation.
